Flat Feet
What Is Flatfoot?
Flatfoot, also called "fallen arches", is medically referred to as pes planus. It is a foot condition where the arch on the sole of the foot has collapsed partially or completely. It is a common condition in both children and adults and may occur with or without pain. Other symptoms that may be experienced by patients include:
- Cramping in the lower extremities
- Ill fitting shoes
- Trouble walking or participating in activites
- Tired, achy feet with prolonged standing or walking
Your Foot and Ankle Specialist diagnoses Pes Planus based upon:
- Physical Examination
- Medical History
- X-rays and possibly other imaging tests
Treatment will depend on whether the condition is symptomatic and the extent of the problem affecting daily activities. Conservative treatment options can include:
- Periodic evaluation to monitor the condition when no symptoms are present
- Orthotics to improve foot function and anatomy
- Activity limitations such as limiting long periods of standing/walking
- Physical therapy for stretching and strengthening exercises
- Medications such as NSAIDS, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to decrease pain and inflammation
- Change the type of shoe worn to a more supportive type
When conservative treatment has been tried and the patient is still experiencing pain and difficulty with ambulation, then your Foot and Ankle Specialist will recommend surgery to repair the problem.
